United States Naval Officer, US Congressman. A native of Bakerville, Tennessee, he made history when he led the crew of the "USS Nautilus" in a North Pole expedition. In 1958 his crew crossed from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean by passing under the North Pole's icecap in the first atomic submarine put into service. The decorated war veteran participated in over ten combat patrol missions before leaving the Navy in 1962. He returned to Tennessee where his attention soon turned to politics. After an unsuccessful run for governor, he ran for a seat in Tennessee's sixth Congressional district winning the first of four terms in 1964. He served in Congress from 1965 to 1973 before being defeated for a fifth term in a reorganized district. After his defeat he founded a data management firm in the Washington D.C. area. He died in a Virginia hospital.
