Jo's obituary was published June 17th 2006 in the "Greenville News". Her contributios to the world of genealogy will benefit many generations and we are blessed people to have had her in our lives.

"York - Mrs. Owens, 77, widow of Billie Ira Owens, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at her home.

She was born July 28, 1928, in Lowell, N.C., to Joseph Carl and Laura Sue Hoffman Roberts. She grew up in York, S.C., attended York Schools and Winthrop University, graduating with her Masters in Education in 1974. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and served as Church historian for many years. She was employed by the Department of Social Services and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She was a member of the Yorkville Historical Society.

An avid genealogist, she and Mrs. Ruth Dixon Thomas published three books transcribing handwritten documents from the public records of York County. They were "The 1850 Census of York County," "The Confederate Veterans Enrollment Book of York County, S.C. 1902" and a supplement to this book compiled by Joseph E. Hart Jr. She joined the Kings Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1984 and serving as Chapter Regent from 1986 to 1991, as District II Director from 1988 to 1991 and as State Librarian from 1991 to 1994 when failing health curtailed her activities. She continued to serve as Chairman of the Old Exchange Building Committee in the Kings Mountain Chapter. She was also a charter member of the White Rose Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Mrs. Owens is survived by her three children, Joseph Earl and Laura Jo Owens of York, and Mary Roberts "Robbie" Lee and her husband, Bryan, of Charleston S.C.; brothers, Carl Dean and wife, Dorothy Dudley Roberts, of Charlotte N.C., Jerry Reid and wife, Emily Nichols Roberts, of Columbia, S.C.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bratton Funeral Home in York, followed by a private burial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, P.O. Box 376, York, SC 29745; to Hospice and Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29730; or to the American Diabetes Association, 222 S. Church St., Suite 336M, Charlotte, NC 28202."
