Charlotte Mina Merritt Casey was born on April 18, 1924 on a farm in Athens Township, the daughter of Oscar and Mina Gish Merritt. She died Sunday, February 18, 2007 at the Mitchell County Hospital at the age of 82 years and 10 months. Charlotte grew up and attended Jewell County Country School and Jewell High School. She worked as a waitress in Beloit and Downs for several years until her marriage, and later worked as a bookkeeper for the Glen Elder CO-OP station for many years. On April 27, 1946, she was united in marriage to Martin "Smoke" Casey in Superior, Nebraska. Two children, Carolyn and Craig, were born to this union. They were privileged to spend more than 58 years of marriage together until his death in September of 2005. Charlotte was a member of the Glen Elder United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #143 Auxiliary, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6242 Auxiliary of Beloit. In addition to her husband, "Smoke", she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Max, Jay, Bill, Lewis, and Robert Merritt; and two sisters, Maxine Merritt and Pauline Davidson. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Scholl and her husband Doug of Glen Elder; her son, Craig Casey of Littleton, Colorado; two sisters, Joan McCombs of South Bend, Indiana, and Eileen Reiss of Twin Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren, Marty and Darin Zimmer, Shane and Trevor Scholl, and Erin and Lauren Casey; four great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, February 22, at the Glen Elder United Methodist Church with burial at Glenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit.
