Spanish-American War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Army during the War with Spain as a Private in Company F, 10th United States Infantry. He was one of five members of Company F awarded the CMOH for their bravery at Santiago de Cuba, on July 1, 1898, with his citation reading: "Gallantly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines and under heavy fire of the enemy." Awarded the Medal on June 22, 1899, he was joined by comrades Sergeant Charles P. Cantrell, Sergeant Andrew J. Cummins, Private William G. Keller, and Private Alfred Polond in being so honored.
