Professional Football Player. "Elbie" was born in Fullerton, Kentucky. After a successful high school career he went to the University of Cincinnati where he became a star in football, basketball and baseball. His college career was interrupted so he could serve in the United States Army during World War II but he returned to the Bearcats in 1946 where he earned All-American honors as a football player. After college he was offered contracts to play baseball for the Cincinnati Reds and football for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He chose to sign with the Steelers and became one of the team's most prolific receivers. Playing from 1947 to 1957 he set team records for most consecutive games played (125) and most passes caught (329). He was selected to play in three pro bowls and was named to the All-Time Pittsburgh Steelers' Team in 1982. After retiring from football he moved to Chillicothe, Ohio to work in his father's construction business.
