He was born to Lewis and Leona (Beckman) Gast. He married Beatrice Froning on November 4, 1950 and she survives in St. Henry.

Thomas (Tracy), Bloomington, IN, Joseph, Seattle, WA and Dan (Becky), Celina; two daughters, Susan (Paul) Wirtz, Worthington, and Paula (Rocket) Rengers, Saint Henry; eight grandchildren and two step grandchildren; two brothers, William (Gerry), Saint Henry and John (Marty), Fort Myers, FL; a sister Jean (Jack ) Bergman, Saint Henry; a sister-in-law Joan (Mark) Wenning, Saint Henry; and a brother-in-law Dr. Louis Froning, Coldwater.
Deceased are a brother Robert; a brother-in-law Maurice Froning; and a sister-in-law Marge Gast.
He attended St. Henry Catholic Church. He was co-owner of The Beckman & Gast Canning Co. and served as president until his retirement in 1983. Jim was a veteran of US Army Air Corps serving during WWII as a 2nd Lieutenant, he served as chaplain for the St. Henry American Legion Post, was appointed to the Board of Governors for Joint Township Community Hospital, served on the board of the Blue Cross of Lima, he was past president of the Ohio Canners and Food Processors Association, an avid gardener, and an active member of St. Henry Kiwanis Club. He was a graduate of St. Henry High School and attended Miami University.
