Ezra Green was born ion 14 Sep 1830 - likely in Howard, Steuben Co, NY - the son of Joseph (1803-1862) & Rosanna (1810-1883) (maiden surname unknown, but census records uniformly show her birthplace as CT, and the US Census of 1880 show the birthplaces of both her parents as CT as well) Green. Sometime between the births of son Ezra in 1830 and daughter Mary Jane in 1837, the Joseph Green family moved from NY to Medina Co, OH, where Joseph is shown in the US Census of 1840. In the US Census of 1850, Joseph & Rosanna Green, are shown in Chatham Twp, Medina Co, OH with 5 of their 7 children: Ezra Green (1831-1893), Mary Jane (Green) Bailey (1836-1869), Rachel (Green) Caton / Bailey (1840-died before 1883), Jehiel Green (1841-1870), and Orin Green (1842-1877). (Their eldest child Sally (Green) Clark / Webb was already married by then, and William Green b 1833 presumably died young). In 1853, the Joseph Green family moved onward to Seneca Twp, Lenawee Co, MI and it is alleged that Esther (Armstrong) Green died at the home of her son Joseph later that year. On 11 Sep 1854, Joseph Green purchased a farm in Sec 36 of Seneca Twp, from Richard & Dorcus Whitney, per Liber 40 / pp 165 & 166. In the US Census of 1860, the Joseph Green family was living in Seneca Twp, with the 2 youngest sons Jehiel & Orin still at home.

On22 Mar 1859 in Hillsdale Co, MI - the adjoining county to the west of Lenawee Co - Ezra married his 1st wife, Mahala Leonard (1842-1914), daughter of William (1816-1888) & Samantha (Moon) (1823-1894) Leonard, who were living in Jefferson Twp, Hillsdale Co, MI in the US Census of 1850. In the US Census of 1860, Ezra & Mahala were living in Hillsdale Co, MI. To their union was born one child, Launa (Green) Taylor (1868-1912) who survived to adulthood. There were apparently two other children – William Green & Rosanna Green – who died in infancy. During the Civil War, Ezra served in Co A of the 11th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. He enlisted in Jefferson Twp, Hillsdale Co, MI on 18 Sep 1863 for 3 yrs, and transferred to Co G of the 8th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry on 20 Jul 1865. He was mustered out at Nashville, TN on 22 Sep 1865.

In the US Census of 1870, Ezra & Mahala with daughter Launa (shown on the census as Louisa) were living in Seneca Twp, Lenawee Co, MI. Also in the household, were Ezra’s widowed mother Rosanna Green, and Ezra’s younger brother Orin Green. Ezra & Orin were identified as shingle makers by trade. Ezra & Mahala divorced on 11 Mar 1872, the venue for the proceedings being Hillsdale, MI (with Mahala as the complainant, and no specific reason given as grounds for the divorce on the decree). Then on 19 May 1872 in Seneca Twp, Ezra remarried – his 2nd wife being Louisa (Heydenberk) Green (1845-1911), daughter of John (ca 1807-1874) & Henrietta (Kettle) (ca 1810-death year unknown, but it appears she was still alive when John died in 1874, as his death record identifies him as “married”, not “widowed”) Louisa (Heydenberk) was the widow of Ezra’s younger brother Jehiel Green. To the union of Ezra Green & Louisa Heydenberk were born 4 children: Orin S. Green (1875-1930), Erskine B. Green (1879-1947), Ethel E. (Green) Covell (1881-1934), and Alfred O. Green (1885-1942).

In the US Census of 1880, Ezra & Louisa were living in St Louis, Gratiot Co, MI. Sons Charles E. Green, Herbert E. Green, Orin S. Green, Erskine B. Green were shown in the household, the 2 oldest boys – Charles E. Green (ca 1865-ca 1887) & Herbert E. Green (1867-1892) - being Ezra Green’s nephews, the sons of Louisa (Heydenberk) Green by her earlier marriage to Ezra’s brother Jehiel Green.

Sometime between the births of their daughter Ethel in St Louis, Gratiot Co in 1881 and their son Alfred in Morenci, Lenawee Co in 1885, the Ezra Green family returned to Lenawee Co, MI - possibly in 1883 when his mother died. (Ezra was the only one of Rosanna Green's 7 children who outlived her).In 1890, Ezra was shown on a list of Civil War veterans in Rollin Twp. Though there is no death record on file in Lenawee Co, Ezra Green died at home in Medina, Lenawee Co, MI, on 5 Jan 1893, according to an affidavit signed by the physician who treated Ezra in his final illness, Dr C M Coffin. From the census records, Ezra Green seems to have been generally a laborer for hire, though he may also have done some farming, living in what are still today, rural areas. Following the death of Ezra, Louisa (Heydenberk) Green / Green married William Hindes.

Joseph Green is buried in Row 9 / Stone 13, in the Old Morenci Cemetery in the Village of Morenci, located at the north edge of the village on the east side of M-156. Joseph is flanked on his left (as you face the front side of his GS) by son Jehiel Green Row 9 / Stone 12 (misidentified as Israel Green on the GS), and is flanked on his right by his son Orrin Green Row 9 / Stone 14. The occupant of Row 9 / Stone 11 to the left of Jehiel Green is unidentified, and may be the final resting place of son Ezra Green, as it is believed that the Green family owned plots 11-14. Interment records for the Old Morenci Cemetery are not known to exist.(Rosanna Green is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery on the west side of M-156, next to her grandson Charles Elmer Green, Jehiel’s son).
