The Hansel family came from Germany to the United States, the emigrant George Hansel's family settling first in Maryland (Frostburg, Allegany County) which was his home until about 1833.

He was the son of Phillip and Hannah Clapsaddle Hansel being born on June 4, 1801. He had 8 siblings: Jacob, Philip, Catherine, Margaret, Sarah, Susannah, John Philip, and Solomon.

He married Frances "Fanny" Musselman on September 6, 1824. Together they had seven children...George Washington, Nancy, Susannah, Frances "Fanny", Francis (who was killed serving the Union at the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863), John and Simon Peter who both died young.

He was engaged in farming near Frostburg, Maryland all his earlier married life but in 1833 moved and settled in Farmington, Fayette County, Pennsylvania when he bought his father-in-laws farm that sat astride the Old National Road.

He was a Whig in politics and one of the solid men of his day. He died on January 8, 1844 at the age of 42 years, 7 months, and 4 days when a tree fell on him and killed him. He is buried in the Hansel Cemetery on his farm in Farminton, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
