Born in Batavia, Indonesia, he married Magdalena Maria Gezina Hoogerland on May 2, 1922 in Holland. He was an officer in the Royal Dutch Army and was posted back to Indonesia where their three children were born:

Jan Coenraad Nicolaas van Boldrik 1923-1972
Hendrik Maarten van Boldrik 1925-1997
Magdalena Marie van Boldrik 1927-2009
m Hans de Koening

During the Japanese invasion of the Dutch Colonies, he and his family were captured and imprisoned in the concentration camps. Aristocratic families were treated more harshly with scant, spoiled food, minimal clothing and hard labor. Jan was very skilled in wood working and made household furniture in peace time. While he was in prison, he carved wooden spoons for the other prisoners. He had also designed a cannon used in the war with Japan.

Jan and his family returned to Holland after the war. He died of Hodgkin's Disease in Vlissingen, Zeeland, Holland.
