José Ramón Aguilar y Morillo was born at San Diego, Alta California, México, where he was baptized in the Presidio Chapel the following day on August 29, 1828 (SD Baptism 06233). Living at Pueblo de los Ángeles in 1844 (1844 Mexican Census). He became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. He married María Concepción Bustamante about 1851. He was living with his family in Santa Ana in July 1860 (1860 US Census).
