Emelyn Story's husband, William Wetmore Story, created the sculpture "Angel of Grief" in 1894, which serves as her grave memorial.

"In his last sculpture, [William] created a monument for his wife's grave in the Protestant Cemetery at Rome. He described the work to a relative: 'It represents the angel of Grief, in utter abandonment, throwing herself with drooping wings and hidden face over a funeral altar. It represents what I feel.'" (The Brownings' Correspondence, 20, 349–360)
