Politician. He was the fourth son of Oliver Cromwell, a 17th century British politician and soldier. He was educated at Felsted School and Emmanuel College at Cambridge. He was a 14-year-old when the Civil War began. After serving under his father in the army, he reached the rank of colonel before being sent to Ireland. He spent most of his active political life in Ireland where he worked hard to relieve the poverty of the country. He was known for his compassion for the Irish. He became Lord Deputy in 1657. From 1653 to 1860 he was the Chancellor of the University of Dublin. Although his career was overshadowed by his father and brother's accomplishments, according to Carlyle's "Life of Cromwell," he is referred as "the best of Cromwell's sons," and this is inscribed on a brass plate in the church where he is buried. On May 10, 1653 he married Elizabeth Russell and the couple had five sons and two daughters.
