Another Pioneer Gone
Mrs. Jane McClain, relict of Michael McClain and
mother of Gilbert, Bascom, and John McClain
died at the residence of the latter on the 23rd
of November 1881. She died on the farm which
she with her husband entered in 1830, having
endured the privations of early settlers and living
to see the wilderness blossom as the rose. She raised
nine children, all of whom visited her last illness.
The deceased was not a member of any church,
although a strong believer in the regular Baptist doctrine
and found much comfort in reading the Bible. Yet in her
last sickness she was for some time under a cloud, but
after earnest prayer was enabled to see (her) way clear,
and bidding all good bye and desiring them to meet her
in heaven she passed away.
Funeral services were held at the residence by R. M.
Bartley, consisting of prayer and a short address
suitable to the occasion, after which her remains were
interred in the family cemetery, there to await the
mourning of the resurrection.
