Anita Howard Baker, of Ettrick, VA died at the Hopewell Health Care Center, Hopewell, VA. She received her early education in the public schools of Newport News, VA and graduated from Huntington High School in 1930. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from Virginia State College for Negroes in 1937, where she also was honored as "Miss Virginia State." She began her teaching mission at Newsome Park Elementary School in Newport News in 1937.

In 1938 Anita Howard was married to William Kenneth Baker and in 1945, they moved to Petersburg, VA, where he accepted a faculty position with Virginia State College. Anita then began her long sojourn in the Petersburg educational arena as a teacher at Blandford Elementary School. She earned a Masters Degree in Education from Virginia State College (now university), where she served as Supervisor of Student Teachers. She went on to serve as Principal of A. P. Hill Elementary School, Assistant Superintendent of Petersburg Public Schools, and retired as Educational Supervisor.

Anita was an active and loyal member of Gillfield Baptist Church in Petersburg where she served as a member of the Deacon's Auxiliary, the Parish Club and the Missionary Society until her health began to fail. She was also active in community affairs, a member of the Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she had served as Bacillus, the Virginia State University Alumni Association, the Girlfriends and the Links Organizations. She was known as the family caregiver. Her devotion to her family, her community and her loving spirit will forever be missed."

A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the Historic Gillfield Baptist Church, 209 Perry Street, Petersburg, VA.

The Ivy Beyond the Wall Memorial Service was held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the church.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the staff of the J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc.,Petersburg, VA.
