Martha Rose Mayes, 84, of Valrico, Fla., and formerly of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at Life Path Hospital in Ruskin, Fla.
Marty, as she was known to family and friends, was a loving and caring person who made a lasting impression on many lives and will be deeply missed. She was the daughter of Homer and Mary Jane Williams.
Marty earned her teaching degree from Evansville College (U of E) and retired from Cynthia Heights School, where she was a third grade teacher for 35 years. She loved to educate kids, and everybody wanted to be in Mrs. Mayes' class.
Marty was an avid bowler and was a member of one of the first bowling leagues in the 1960s at Colonial Lanes, now known as River City Recreation. She continued to bowl at RCR until her move to Valrico in 1994.
In Valrico, Marty was very active in the Women's Division of the Moose Lodge, beginning with the Academy of Friendship. She served on several chairs before becoming Senior Regent for 1999 and 2000 and continued on in Green Capper and College of Regent. Marty's Moose friends say that she was always willing to help out with anything that was needed, even if it meant peeling carrots and potatoes for dinners provided by the Moose Women's Division.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, George Mayes.
Marty is survived by her husband, Bill Thorne, of Valrico; children, Michael and his wife, Mary of Green Oaks, Ill., Cindy Jacobs and her husband, Mark of Spring, Texas, and David and his wife, Brenda of Evansville; grandchildren, Chris Mayes and his wife, Heather of Evanston, Ill., Melinda Mayes of Portland, Ore., and Jessey Scott and her husband, Daniel of Tomball, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Julia Scott.
Services 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Alexander East Chapel. Entombment will be at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Friends may visit Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel.
