His break in the industry came after meeting Hoagy Carmichael which led to his career on the nightclub circuit. By the late 1940s, he was starring in films beginning with "Make-Believe Ballroom" (1949), followed by "When You're Smiling" (1950), "Sunny Side of the Street" (1951) and "Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder" (1952). During the 1950s and 1960s, he recorded several popular songs for which included "I Believe" (1953), "Moonlight Gambler" (which achieved gold record status in 1956), "Love Is A Golden Ring" (achieved a Top 10 placing on the American Billboard Charts in 1957) and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" (1963). From 1955 to 1956, Laine hosted his own TV program. Additionally, he frequented such shows as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" and had acting roles on several programs including "Perry Mason." Laine remained an active performer into his 90s. He was the recipient of two stars (one for his music accomplishments and one for his TV career) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was married to actress Nan Grey from 1950 until her death in 1993. He died of complications following hip replacement surgery.
