"Hordie" SMITH was my paternal grandmother's oldest brother. Though they had different mothers, as he was born of my great-grandfather's first marriage, he was very dear to her. They remained in contact until his death. The family lore has it that he had a secret barbecue sauce recipe that was "out of this world." He would make up many batches of it, but would never share the recipe. He went on to establish Smitty's BBQ, in Gary, which became quite popular. He is still missed.
