PLYMOUTH – J. Thomas Markley, 72, died Tuesday, March 28, at the Jordan Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Nancy A. (Bonin) Markley. They were married for 30 years. Mr. Markley was born in Bellwood Pa., the son of the late William and Edith (Briggs) Markley. He was a graduate of Shippensburg University with a degree in physics and mathematics and completed the advanced management program at Harvard. Mr. Markley founded and was the President of JTM Associates, a consulting firm specializing in senior management consulting for telecommunications, data communications and electric utilities. Previously, he was deputy program manager of NASA's Apollo Program. While at NASA, he was instrumental in the communications design for Project Mercury; served as project engineer on John Glenn's "Friendship Seven'' flight; and was one of seven people who started Project Apollo. Later, Mr. Markley was president of Raytheon Worldwide, corporate vice president of Raytheon Co., and president of Raytheon Data Systems. He served on the President's Science Advisory Council, as a member of the Space Defense Initiative Committee and as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. He served on many corporate boards and committees and published several speeches and books. He had recently been an associate of Connecticut Research. Mr. Markley enjoyed boating, fishing, golf, reading and was a longtime member of the Plymouth Yacht Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Dwight Markley of Kennebunk, Maine, Keith Markley and his wife, Pam, of Campton, N.H., Gretchen Barry of Charlotte, N.C., William T. Johnstone and his wife, Kim, of Holderness, N.H., Pamela Boucher and her husband, Peter, of Plymouth, and Wendy Collins and her husband, Dean, of Manchester; his brother, Fred Markley of Camp Hill, Pa.; his sisters, June Miller of Roseville, Mich., Mary Decker of Bellwood, Pa., and Charlotte Miller of Michigan; nine grandchildren, Melissa Dulin, Frederick Bickford, Tyler Markley, Morgan Markley, Benjamin Markley, William and Lucas Johnstone, and Sophia and Emmalia Collins; and his great-granddaughter, Kristina Dulin. Services will be at Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth. Visiting hours are Friday, March 31, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday, April 1, at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by Mass at St. Peter Church in Plymouth at 10 a.m., followed by a reception and memorial gathering at the Radisson Hotel in Plymouth. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Plymouth. Donations in his memory may be made to the Jordan Hospital, 275 Sandwich St., Plymouth, MA 02360.
