Hester A. Newton
The following obituary was read at
the funeral:
Hester A. Newton, a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William McCance was born
May 5, 1827, in Hamilton County,
Indiana and died aat the home of her son,
Willliam A. Newton, in Toulon,
Illinois, March 8, 1911.
In the year 1848, she with four
brothers, their families and one sister,
(the late wife of Hugh Y. Godfrey)
left their Indiana home and settled
near Toulon,Illinois. This has been
their continuous home since.
On September 29,1852, she was married
to James Harvey Newton, who died January 8,1902.
This union was blessed with two sons. James
Isaac and William A. both of Toulon
and both of whom are still living and
watched their loving, faithful mother
cross the Silent River.
People who have lived the lives
Mr. and Mrs. Newton need no
words of eulogy. Their lives are an
open book not only worthy of reading
but also of imitation.
Being fully prepared for the change of worlds,
she waited patiently for the summons and was
anxious to go to Him. where the welcome
plaudit awaited her "Well done, good and
faithful servant, enter thou into the
joys of thy Lord."
She was the only living charter member
of the Christian church of Toulon
and had the supreme pleasure of seeing the
church of her choise grow from a little
struggling band to one of high spiritual
influence in the community, and enjoyed seeing
the beautiful house of the Lord erected
and dedicated in which we meet today,
to pay our last tribute of repect to her memory.
This is a time when works are inadequate to ex-
press our feeling of high estimation of the true worth she possessed. Truly it can be said of her"She has fought the
good fight, has kept the faith, and has gone to wear the crown."
The funeral services were held Saturday morning from the
Christian church. Rev. Charles Williams of Ke-wanee, was in charge, being assisted by Rev. Ballew. Rev. Williams
preached an excellent sermon from
Zach. 14:7, "In the evening time there
shall be light." The urial was in Toulon cvemetery, where many of her old-time neighbors and friends
sleep the last sleep.
The bearers were F.B.Nicholson,William Mawbey, H.C.Bradley,
James E. White, W.F. Nicholson.
