James W. Burnett, 71, died suddenly while sitting in a chair at his home in the Georgeville community about 9:30 Monday morning. He was stricken while Mrs. Burnett was out the house, and was unconscious when she came into the room. Dr. C. L. Woolsey was called, but Mr. Burnett died before he arrived.
Mr. Burnett had been in poor health for two years, and had had several heart attacks. However, recently he had seemed to be in his usual health. Monday morning he arose as usual, ate his breakfast and then shaved. It is necessary to get water some little distance from the house at the Burnett home, and he had made a cart to haul the water. Shortly after breakfast he went to get a load of water, and had some difficulty in getting the cart through the snow. He tramped the loose snow down so that he could get the cart over it, and went into the house. It is thought he over-exerted himself getting the water.
James Burnett was born at Boonesboro, Iowa, August 14, 1865. He was the son of William and Mary. He was 71 years, six months and eight days of age at the time of his death.
The Burnett family moved to Missouri in 1867.
He was married to Sarah Cramer on July 30, 1890 and to this union seven sons were born. Three of them preceded him in death. The widow and four sons, Frank, of Lawrence, Kan., Marion and Olen of Kansas City, Kan. and Elmer of the Georgeville community survive. He is also survived by 11 grandsons; and by two brothers.
The Burnett family lived in Braymer many years, during which time Mr. Burnett was manager of the Peoples Mutual Telephone Co. They left here and went to Kansas City, where they lived for a number of years before locating at Ovid. Mr. Burnett served on the Kansas City police force. At Ovid he operated a general store, and sold it about a year ago when his physical health made it impossible for him to do the work.
Funeral services were held from the New Hope church, Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. S. O. Borland, of Millville. Burial was at the New Hope cemetery.
