US Marine Lcpl James Ray Mitchell, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Wilson, NC.

US Marine Lance Corporal James Ray Mitchell was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, LCPL Mitchell served our country until March 27th, 1970 in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He was 19 years old and was not married. It was reported that James died from drowning. His body was recovered. James was born on June 13th, 1950 in Wilson, North Carolina. LCPL Mitchell is on panel 12W, line 049 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

US Marine LCpl James R Mitchell of Wilson was listed among Vietnam conflict casualties announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Defense. Mitchell, 19, son of Mrs Janie Mitchell of 607 Dew Street and a 1968 graduate of Ralph L Fike High School, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during February 1969. He was sent to Vietnam last November. Wilson funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as additional word is received from the government, Darden Funeral Home officials stated this morning. Other survivors include four sisters, Mrs Essie Mack, Mrs Lettie Williams, Miss Bobby Jean Mitchell, all of Washington D.C., Mrs Bernice Ellis of Sims; and three brothers, Cleveland Jr and Michael, both of Wilson, and Roscoe Mitchell of Washington, D.C.

He served with Heavy Trucks in the Headquarters and Services Company, 1st Forces Services Regiment, Forces Logistics Command, 3rd Marine Amphibious Forces.

He was awarded The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
