21 Apr 1862 – Enlisted as Private, Company I, 42nd Mississippi Infantry at Sardis, Mississippi at the age of 22
The 42nd Mississippi Company I was mustered together in April of 1862 out of Panola County, Mississippi at the Sardis Courthouse during a town rally/meeting as was the case throughout the North and the South during the war. After a new call to volunteer by the State of Mississippi to replenish the State with its quota and obligation towards the Confederacy, the County found the men it needed to fulfill this request with 100 men or a company. In this case, Company I. The County itself was a poor farming community, made up of private land owners who relied on their own families to tend their farms rather than slaves and farmhands.
