ROME - At the home of his son-in-law, Willard S. Sink, 611 N. Washington Street, at 11 p.m. on Saturday, after a brief illness from pneumonia, occurred the death of John Hook, one of Rome's former active businessmen.
Mr. Hook, who was the son of Peter Hook, was born in East Church, Isle of Sheppey, Kentshire, England, on March 2, 1825, and came to America in 1858, locating in Rome, whither his mother had preceded him, his father
dying in England. Here he was employed for a year by Dr. John Tyler of West Rome and then, after a year, he went to work for Northrup & Ethridge, the wholesale grocery firm, then located where A. Ethridge & Co. now are. In 1867 Mr. Hook bought out the flour and feed business of Cook, Kenyon & Armstrong, on James Street, and continued in that line until about 1885, when he retired from active life. During a part of this same period, he ran a grist mill on the site of the Pritchard block. He was a member of Roman Lodge, F.& A. M., Fort Stanwix Chapter, No. 153, R. A. M., and Rome Commandery, K. T. In politics he was a Democrat. In 1865 and 1866 he served as a trustee of the village from the second ward. He was one of the charter members of St. George's Association of Rome, which was organized to help Englishmen who came to America. Nearly all are dead, except S. Aland and W H. Davies of Rome, Fred E. Mitchell of Oneida and Charles Cheetham of Vineland, N. J. He was a pleasant man to meet and, possessing a good memory, could tell of many of the businessmen here forty years ago.
He is survived by the following children, J. William, Albert H., Theodore J. Hook, and Mrs. Willard S. Sink of this city, and Frank E. Hook of Hudson, Mich. There are also the following brothers and sisters, George Hook, Miss Hannah Hook of Deerfield, IL., Mrs. J. H. Hitchcock of Englewood, IL, Mrs.
