Obituary-Ashworth-February 9, 1905, Wills Point Chronicle:

Just as we go to press we learn of the death of John Ashworth of Myrtle Springs, which sad event occured at 3 o'clock yesterday, Wednesday morning. Mr. Ashworth has been in bad health for some time but his many friends and relatives had hoped against hope that he would finally pull through, yet fate decreed otherwise and there is a vacant place in the Myrtle Springs community which is going to be hard to fill. Mr Ashworth was one of Van Zandt county's best and most influential citizens, and until his health began to fail was one of the leading business men of Myrtle Springs. The Chronicle extends its sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends in the loss of so good a man.

John A Ashworth enlisted in the C S A on Sep 11, 1861. He was wounded (resulting in the loss of one eye) while fighting near Murfreesboro, TN and a few days later was captured and transfered to Louisville, KY. He was then transfered to Fort McHenry, MD where he was paroled on Apr 30, 1863. He was transfered to City Point, VA for exchange and returned to duty. He was again captured at Spanish Fort, Mobile, AL on Apr 8, 1865. He was confined at Ship Island, MS until being transfered to Vicksburg on May 1, 1865.

Nothing is ended until it is forgotten. That which is held in memory still endures and is real. We are grateful for the records of the past which bring inspiration and courage. We pray that our lives may always be patterned to give such devotion and service as did our forefathers of this great Southland. Amen
