Lt. William M Agnew Jr. was the oldest son of William Maynard Agnew and Sarah Esther (Weide) Agnew, of Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas. When Bill was a child, his family moved from El Dorado, Kansas to Tulsa, Oklahoma, before relocating to Albuquerque, New Mexico during the 1930s.
During World War II, Bill was a fighter pilot in the 350th Fighter Squad, 353rd Fighter Group, European Campaign. He flew over 70 combat missions, and was awarded the Air Medal with 6 oak leaf clusters as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross.
While stationed overseas, Bill became engaged to a young woman from Scotland. He died tragically when his plane crashed shortly after the war's end, and is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery, New Mexico.
