Venezuelan Statesman. He served as the Acting President of Venezuela from May 21, 1993 to June 5, 1993. He attended the Central University of Venezuela and while there, became a member of the student movement of the Accion Democratica (AD) political party. He graduated with a degree in law in 1947 and in 1948, was elected to the National Congress. He was elected secretary general of the AD later that year, but wasn't able to assume the position due to the suppression of political parties following the overthrow of Romulo Gallegos. He was arrested in July of 1950 for continued participation in AD activities and was imprisoned for four years before being released and expelled from his homeland. He returned from exile in 1959 and was elected to the National Congress. He continued to serve in both legislative and government posts until succeeding President Carlos Andres Perez in 1993 after Perez was suspended for corruption allegations. He served as Acting President for a brief time until being succeeded by Ramon Jose Velasquez on June 5, 1993.
