James was the son of Dr Benjamin Franklin & Margaret Blair.In May 1891 he married Louisa Turney.

They were the parents of Erskine Ashby. After her death in 1892, he remarried.

On 5 Feb 1895, James married Mary Turney, Louise's sister. They were the parents of Lloyd and Loula (Johnson).
