JAMES MERRITT was the third child born to THOMAS W. and MARTHA "PATSY" ROWLAND MERRITT. James was born 01 Oct 1823 and died 20 May 1904 all in Greensboro, Greene County, GA. He is buried at Walkers United Methodist Church Cemetery in Greensboro.
On 13 August 1843, at the age of 19, he married his first wife HARRIETT ANN MARIAH FLEETWOOD. She was the daughter of WILLIAM FLEETWOOD and MARIAH (BYRD) BIRD. Harriett was born about 1827 and died before 1861. She was only 34 years old. Harriett Ann and James Merritt had six(6) children.
On 12 December 1861, James married his second wife SARAH "SALLY" SIDWELL.

In March 1862, during the War Of Northern Aggression, James MERRITT joined Company K, 44th Regiment, Georgia. In March 1863, he was in Company "G" 66th Georgia. James was discharged in 1865 in Greensboro, GA. He was wounded in the hand, face, lip and nose.
Official Records state the following:
MUSTER ROLL OF COMPANY G, 66th REGIMENT - GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY, ARMY OF TENNESSEE - C.S.A.
GREENE, MORGAN AND OTHER COUNTIES, GEORGIA
Merritt, James -- private in Co. K 44th Regiment Ga. Inf., March 1, 1862. In Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, Va., July 8, 1862 Discharged, disability, February 24, 1863. Enlisted as a private in Co. G, 66th Regiment, Georgia Inf., August 15, 1863. Wounded July 20, 1864, near Atlanta, Ga. Died in Receiving and Distributing Hospital, Atlanta, Ga.; of gunshot wound July 25, 1864.
Obviously, he didn't die, but it's easy to make such mistakes in the middle of a war.

James Merritt, who says his date of birth was about 30 Nov. 1824 in Greene County, has a CSA pension application on line in the GA archives. He says he enlisted in March 1862 with Company K of the 44th Ga regiment and served 12 months. After discharge, he joined up with Company G of the 66th . At the surrender he was in the hospital in Danville, VA. he had been wound in his left hand. On his application he said he had lost all his land to pay for taxes in 1902, and had a cancer growing on his face and lip. Ezekiel G. Askew was his witness from the same unit, and said Mr. Merritt really needed a pension.
