On Jan. 1904, Judge J.B.T. Thornton appointed him deputy sheriff Prince William County, and he served in that capacity 8 years.
He was then elected sheriff [Nov. 1911] and re-elected and remained Sheriff until 1928 during many of the Prohibition years.
