JoAnn was the daughter of Josie Evert and Lillie Ethel (Cohoon) Longsdorff. She was a cheerleader and the class Valdictorian at her high school in Maroa, Illinois. She attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Years later (1985), she would earn a PhD in Psychology at a school in Menlo Park, California. On 8 Feb 1947, she married Edwin John Abramson at Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa. After Ed died, JoAnn married James Evertt Dyson at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, Iowa on 24 Feb 1968. They would later divorce, but remained friends until the end. Jim had been the Best Man at her marriage to Ed, and was Ed's boyhood buddy. Together, Ed and JoAnn had 5 children: Cathy Anne (married Frederick Clifton Hollendorfer, then Steve Auble), Karen Marie (married Scott Wade Purdin, then Steve Max Kenrick), Marc Edward (married Mary Elizabeth Wilcox, then Regina Elaine Weil, and finally Marla Sigman), Joel David (married Karen Teresa Rosenkrantz), and Eric Paul Abramson. Besides being a mother, JoAnn worked as a Home Economics teacher at East High School in Des Moines, Iowa and as a psychologist at the Agnews Institution in Santa Clara County, California (off Zanker Road). JoAnn never used Ethel as her name, preferring several versions of her original middle name "Joan", pronounced JoAnn. Other spellings used besides JoAnn, were Joanne and Joanna.
