Henry Holt Wilson Crittenden was the son of John Crittenden and Amanda Melvina Barrett Crittenden. He was married to Bettie Temple Phillips on December 20. 1870 in Chesterfield, Virginia (Second Branch Baptist Church). Their eleven children are listed below. He was both a Medical Doctor and Pharmacist. His original Drug Store was in Amelia, Virginia, however he later moved it to Burkeville, Virginia. In 1892 the store was moved again. This time to Crewe, Virginia. In the late 1800's he built a home in Crewe at 320 East Virginia Avenue, next to the Baptist Church. In 1903, when he died, his son, Floyd Newbill, took over the business.

Henry Holt Wilson Crittenden served in the Confederate Army as a Private from 1861 to 1865. Crittenden served in Capt. Douthat's Co., Light Artillery (Botetort Artillery) and Capt. J. W. Drewry's Co., of the Second Regiment Virginia Artillery (Southside Artillery). Drewry's artillery unit was converted to the 5th Battalion Virginia Infantry in the later stages of the war.

From the Journal of the American Medical Association, Volume 41, Part 2. "Henry H. W. Crittenden, M. D. Washington University School of Medicine, Baltimore, 1867, died at his home in Crewe, Va., November 30, from paralysis, after an illness of 2 weeks, aged 59".
