S. P. ATCHLEY

S. P. "Red" Atchley, son of Frank Atchley, came to Tulia in 1919 from Celina, Tenn. after serving aboard the U.S.S. Aphrodite in W.W.I off the coast of France. In Tulia, he worked for M. G. "Boss" Stamford at the Olympic Barber Shop. He bought the Olympic Barber Shop about 1921 and continued to operate it until August 1943 when he sold to John Ballenger. After selling the shop, he raised and bred Jersev cattle for dairy purposes one half mile east of Tulia until his death in 1954. He married Alpha Shafer in December of 1922 in Tulia. She was the daughter of Caleb Jones Shafer who had come to Tulia in 1920 from Alamagorda, New Mexico, but originally from Brown County. He and Eppy Francis Wimberly were married January 7, 1883 in Williamson County. They were parents of fourteen children. Alpha, Abbie, and Darius were the only children that moved to Tulia.

The Shafers were members of the Primitive Baptist Church. He was a farmer and carpenter. He died in 1928. After his death, Mrs. Shafer made her home with Alpha and S. P. Atchley until her death in 1950.

"Red" and Alpha were members of the Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Stewards several years. Together they were sponsors and counselors for the Epworth League. The couple had two children: Voncille and Kelly.

Kelly married Ramona Selby in 1959 in Littlefield, Texas.

Voncille married John Earl Simpson in 1956 in Tulia. John Earl purchased Conner Motor Company of Tulia from L. G. Conner in 1960. The couple lived in Silverton, Texas prior to 1960 where he had the Chevrolet dealership. He sold Simpson Motor Company in Tulia in 1969 to Harold Rudd. He farms and ranches ten miles east of Tulia. At the present, he is manager of Tulia Wheat Growers. The couple has four children: Celia is a student at W.T.S.U., Samantha, John Earl III, and Olivia are students in Tulia High School.
