William H. Ackerman served as a Private in Company I of the 70th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War.

He enlisted in the 70th New York at Paterson, New Jersey. He was 19 years of age at the time of his enlistment.

He was killed in action on July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

He was initially buried south of Nicholas Codori's farm.

He was later reinterred in the New York Plot in the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Section G, Site #22.
