Lois Smith was born on the 28th day of November, 1840, in Jefferson County, Illinois; here she grew to womanhood and on the 27th day of September, she was united in marriage to Dr. Wm. A. Hughey. To this union 8 children were born. An infant daughter, Nora, Mrs. Shipley and Isaac preceded their mother in death. Della, Mrs. Womelduff; Josie, Mrs. Holder and Thos. L. Hughey of Kansas City, Mo and John and Benjamin of Belle Rive, Ill survive.
On the 20th dy of November, 1894 the husband, Dr. Hughey passed away and for almost 22 years sister Hughey has walked alone in widowhood, living in anticipation of meeting that husband with whom she walked in peace and sweet fellowship for 35 years.
Sister Hughey gave her heart to God over 60 years ago and for three score year she walked in faith and trust in him that said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." She was intensely religious, her thought and conversation was of God and the god and pure. She was an earnest worker in the church and by her good life, loving words and earnest prayers helped many a poor struggling sinner into the fold of Christ.
She had poor health all winter, on the 23rd of April, Easter Sunday, her daughter, Mrs. Holder, took her to see her daughter Nora's grave and on the 24th, the next day, she took her bed and was never able to be out any more. Her sufferings were intense but in them all there was a perfect resignation and a sweet peace filled her heart as she implicitly trusted the Christ. On Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock on the 24th day of June, she was not, for God took her. She was conscious to the last and passed away in great peace at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Holder in Kansas City, Mo.
After a short service in Kansas City, the body accompanied by the two daughters, Mrs. Womelduff and Mrs. Holder, was brought to Belle Rive where the funeral was conducted by Rev. J. C. Kinison of West Frankfort, Ill assisted by Revs. Hughey of Norris City and E. F. Hicks of Opdyke.
She was a worthy and honored member of the Methodist church and also of the Eastern Star lodge, the lodge having charge of the services at the grave.
Sister Hughey was truly a good Christian lady and a large concourse of people was present at the funeral showing he esteem in which she as held.
Beside the 5 children, one brother, Ben Smith of this county, the surviving member of the father's family, a host of relatives and friends remain to mourn their loss.
