The famous Indian Chief Johnny Green chief of the Mesquakie was known as the friend of the white man.
He died on the Iowa river where he was camped at his favorite spot when he became ill and soon died. He loved to fish and hunt. His friend Commander C. Horton had a small log cabin built on the spot where he had died in memory of his friend Johnny.
The spot where he was buried as of 1910 is now state land; directly back of the old residence of Colonel Horton.
*There is another memorial (#110413894) for him in the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery, Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa.
