According to records James Elbert Austin served in the CSA 8th MS Vol. Inf. and achieved the rank of Sergeant. Served on extra duty at Bridgeport, Alabama. His nature of service was as an ax man. On the prisoners of war roll it shows where James Elbert Austin surrendered at Citronelle, AL May 4, 1865, and paroled at Meridian,MS May 16, 1865.
