James attended Malletts Bay schools until joining the U.S. Army in 1959. He retired from the Vermont Army National Guard in 2000. In between, James spent many years working at the Burlington Street Department, as well as working in the manufacturing industry in Vermont and Connecticut. He enjoyed big band music, jigsaw puzzles and woodworking. He was an avid coin and gun collector.
James is survived by his three children, Margareta (Anthony) Quintela of St. Albans, Mark (Denise) Francis of Milton, Matthew Francis of Milton; sisters Gloria (John) Mazza of Milton, Norma Hagen of Arlington, Linda (Maurice) Sweeney of St. George, Alma (Raymond) Pelchat of Colchester; brothers, Bruce (MaryLou) Francis of Colchester, Timothy Francis of Colchester; granddaughters, Amanda Quintela, Alexandra Quintela, Jessica Francis, Kayla Francis, Allison Francis; and grandson, Andrew Francis; his former wife Patricia (Joseph) Miller; several nieces and nephews; as well as close friend and companion Richard T. Tenney.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Pauline Russell; and grandson Ryan Francis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 416 Church Road, Colchester.
Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery. As per James' request, there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.
