Obituary of John Eifert
John Eifert was born July 12, 1841, in Dirlammen, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany and died at his home last Saturday afternoon at the age of 65 years 11 months and 10 days. When 24 years of age he left the land of his birth and came to America. He first settled in Lock Port, NY where he remained for one year. In 1866 he came to Waverly, where he lived up to the time of his death.
In 1868 he was married to Sophia Kausbaum, his now sorrowing widow. This union was blessed with three sons and three daughters, namely, Carl, Joh and Mrs. Hattie Hoegerof Waverly; Louis, of Fennemore, Wis; Mrs Pauline Brennecke of Toledo, Ohio and Mrs. Ida Johnson of Ft Collins, Colo.
Thirty-four years ago Mr. Eifert began business in a small way here in Waverly. His business grew until the Eifert dry goods house was known throughout the length and breadth of the county. About ten years ago Mr. Eifert associated with himself his sons, Carl and John, and the firm name became John Eifert & Sons. Mr. Eifert remained at the head of the firm until about a year ago when he retired and the business has since then been conducted by Carl and John Eifert under the firm name of John Eifert's Sons.
Mr. Eifer was a good citizen and served the city in various official capacities. For twenty-one years he was a member of the board of education and for three years a city councilman. He was also a charter member of the Home Investment Co., of which he was vice president at the time of his death.
For many years he was a sufferer of a complication of diseases, but the immediate cause of his death was a stroke of apoplexy. He was stricken last Wednesday while at work in the store. Hewas taken to his home where for a while it seemed that he might recover. All that human skill could do for him was done, but all was of no avail.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lang. assisted by Rev. Bauernfeind of Waterloo, last Tuesday afternoon at the Evangelical church. During the service every business house in Waverly was closed. There were gathered at the funeral service a very large concourse of people, perhaps one fo the very largest that ever gathered on a similar occasion in Waverly.
A good citizen, a kind neighbor, a loving father and husband has been taken from our midst.
