John Newton Campbell was the son of John Cook Campbell and Delphia P. Bailey. He was sixteen in August, 1864 when he volunteered for service in the Confederate Army at Coffeville, Yalobusha Co., Mississippi. He was a private in Company A, 1st Regiment of Mississippi Cavalry.

He migrated with his father from Yalobusha Co., MS to Titus Co., TX about 1873. He married Josephine Latson about 1876 in Titus Co., TX. After her death on 8 Mar 1886 he married Mary Elizabeth Sealy on 25 Aug 1887 in Clay Co., AL. He is buried in Union Hill Cemetery without a marker.
