In 1845 he was a student at the University of Virginia. In 1850 he was practicing medicine in Essex County, Virginia. He married Ann Madison Haile in 1853. On December 12,1861, he joined Company A of the Ninth Virginia Militia at King and Queen Courthouse. He was made 2nd Sergeant, soon to be detailed as Assistant Surgeon. Postwar he farmed near Stevensville in King and Queen County. In 1871 he married Mary Epes Robins.
