BIOGRAPHICAL EXCERPTS
Homer was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Petoskey, the son of Otto and Sylvia (Smith) Swadling. He grew up in Petoskey and attended Petoskey schools.
In the late 1930s, he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps, serving at Camp Wolverine. Then on April 1, 1941, he entered the U.S. Army. He served in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters of operation. He was present at the landings on Normandy during D-Day, and fought in battles and campaigns in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Northern France. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Ribbon, and the European, African, and Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Silver Service Star. On May 11, 1946, he married Marion Petrowski and they enjoyed a loving 56-year marriage.
He retired from Penn-Dixie Cement Plant after 35 years. He enjoyed camping, hunting, polka dancing and spending special times with his family. He was a man who loved to tell or hear a good story, and loved making people laugh. He was a member of St. Francis Church.

Homer is survived by his wife, and by their sons and one daughter, Sue He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; one sister; and one half brother. [Edited]
