Obituary... Samuel Askey a respected resident of this county for 44 years, passed, away at his home, 1211 Valley Street, at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from heart trouble, after having been in poor health for several years. He had been in a critical condition since last May.
The funeral was held at the home yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 o 'clock, Rev F. N. Willis, D.D., of the Methodist E. Church conducting the service.
Singing was by a male quartet composed of Russell an Clarence Stephenson, M.B. Harris and Virgil Spicer.
The pallbearers were Rev D. Nicoll, R.W. McIntyre, John Malnburg, W.A. Harding, S.D. Soliday.
Burial was in Red Oak Cemetery.
Those who came for a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. H.F. Barr, Dakota, Illinois; Hugh Askey, Keokuk, Iowa; Mrs Hattie Ruff, Tecumseh, Kansas.
Samuel Askey was born in Centre county, Penn. July 5, 1842 and in 1850 moved to Illinois with his parents.
He enlisted in Co.B. 46th Illinois infantry and served two years in the Civil War, returning to Stevenson County, Ill, where he was married in May 1871, to Mary Fisher, who died in 1873 leaving one son, Henry Frank Askey of Red Oak, who survives.
On June 22, 1875, Mr Askey was married to Miss Nancy Walker, who survives. They came to Iowa in 1872, locating on a farm in Pilot Grove Township where they continued to live until 1896, when they moved to Red Oak, Iowa.
In addition the wife and son named above, Mr Askey is survived by these following children; Vola I Umphreys, of Red Oak; Mrs May Mullen, Pilot Grove; Mrs Helen Hossle, Pilot grove; Hugh Askey, Keokuk, Iowa.
Deceased was a prominent man in the county for many years. He was a faithful member of the Methodist E. Church for 46 years and was not only a charter member of the Pilot Grove church, but helped build the first churches in Elliott, Pilot Grove, Grant, Arlington and other neighboring charges. He was also a member of the G.A.R. Post.
He was a good man whose virtues were appreciated by a wide circle of friends. These friends extend to the bereaved family the sincerest sympathy.
