After the Evetts arrival in Texas, Indians captured Susan and held her prisoner for almost 10 years before her recapture. Her mother passed away in July 1843 and never knew the fate of her daughter. Susan had been taken by Pete Nacona, father of Quanah Parker, at age 2, kept in Louisiana until Col. James S Murphy brought her to the Brazos River, put her on a horse to swim the river at full banks, to get back to her family. Susan and William W. Moorhead were married at the home of Col. Murphy in Sabine Par., Louisiana, Dec. 23, 1847. (From info on the Moorhead family written by Mrs. B. Botkin Sr. in "Coryell Co., Texas Families 1854-1985" and from info posted on ancestry.com by Terry Olsen.)

Susan's parents, Julia Price and James H Evetts, were married in the Mexican State of Texas in 1831 in what was then Austin colony, now Austin county. The children of his first marriage were born in Tennessee, but his other six children were born in Texas. (Submitted by Dana Ribble)
