Richard Alan ACARREGUI
Our wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend died November 4, 2001 in Seattle after a courageous 12-year fight with cancer. Born May 27, 1942 in Seattle. Survived by Janet, his loving wife of 34 years, his sons Brian and his wife Chrissy, Mark and his wife Christine, Rick and his wife Refawne, and his grandchildren Olivia, Chad, and Megan. Also survived by his brother Robert, his sister Janet Brunhaver, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dick was blessed with lifelong friends from grade school days at St. Augustine's in Spokane, WA, and Portland, OR where he graduated from Jesuit H.S. At Jesuit he excelled both academically and as student body president. He was multi-talented. He was an accomplished pianist and a member of the debate team. Outside of class he was the first quarterback of Jesuit, captain of the football team, president of the first letterman's club his junior and senior years, letterman in basketball and baseball, and an Eagle Scout. After a year at Santa Clara, Dick went on to graduate from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He then earned his J.D. degree from the University of Oregon Law School in 1966.
Dick moved to Seattle to be with his love Janet and began his successful career as a lawyer in the Attorney Generals office with interim service with the National Guard Reserves. He then joined the law firm of Casey and Pruzan where he worked for over 30 years, becoming a partner and focusing on Business and Real Estate law. The last few years of his career he was of counsel at the firm Lasher, Holzapfel, Sperry, and Ebberson.
Although Dick had a successful career, most important to him were his family and friends. He was the best husband, friend and father one could have ever asked for. As a father, he was always there as a fan and supporter. As young children he was our coach. He was a dad that was always there rooting for us on the sidelines and encouraging us in any endeavor. Later in life he was a mentor, friend, and pal we all had trouble besting.
Dick was much beloved and active in the community. He has been a member of the Washington Athletic Club for over 30 years and longtime member of the 101 Club. Golf was one of Dick's true loves. He was a member of Broadmoor Golf Club for 24 years, was a past president, and actively served on the committees of the club for many years. He was a member of the NW Senior Golf Association, served on the board of the WJGA and the PNGA. A true competitor, he carried as low as a 3-handicap, and had 5 career holes-in-one. He was also a big fan of both the U of O Ducks and the U of W Huskies.
Special thanks to Dr. Hank Kaplan who fought every step of the way with Dick for the last 12 years in his courageous fight with cancer. This gave him the opportunity to see each of his sons happily marry and to meet his grandchildren. We treasure every day that we were able to keep him with us.
Husband, father, and friend, he will be extremely missed. He touched so many lives with kind words and many stories and poems. We are all better people having had him in our lives. Our family will never forget the times we spent together; the weekends away at our cabin on Whidby Island, our family vacations, dinners at our home, and the countless rounds of "family golf."
