Boyd W. Betterton, 67, of Jacksonville, FL passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved family on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006. Born on June 2, 1939 to parents Joe Lee and Edna Mae Betterton in Deport, TX, he moved to the Jacksonville area 13 years ago.

Following his honorable service in The United States Navy, Mr. Betterton began a career in law enforcement, and worked at every level including city, county, state, and federal. Of the Protestant faith, he was a long time Shriner, and a devoted husband and father. He was often affectionately referred to as "The Candy Man" and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Mr. Betterton was preceded in death by his mother, father and sister, Jodelle Cooper.

He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, June M. Betterton; six sons, Kelly Betterton (Sonya) of Brownfield, TX, Kyle Betterton (Terri) of Palestine, TX, Kraig Betterton (Cassandra) of Cooper, TX, Dwayne Betterton of Jacksonville, FL, Brian Betterton of Dallas, TX, and Thomas Betterton of Orange Park, FL; one daughter, Ann Howard of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were officiated by Associate Lay Pastor Bill Hogg and were held on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Church of the Nazarene in Orange Park, FL. Arrangements were under the care of Broadus-Raines Funeral Home, 501 Spring St, Green Cove Springs, FL (904) 284-4000.
