Mary Ethel Browning Allen was born on 28 December 1874 in Gadsden, Etowah, Alabama to William Browning and Rachel Simpson Browning. Mary married George C. Allen in Gadsden on 15 June 1907. They had the following known children: George, James Browning, and William. James eventually became an Alabama senator. (You can read a short biography of him on this website). Mary died in the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital in Gadsden on 25 December 1943. She had diabetes, and had to have her left leg amputated. This surgery resulted in gangrene on her leg, and Mary died five days after the surgery, at age 68. She was buried in Forest Cemetery in Gadsden on 26 December 1943.
