Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Lynch honed his trademark growling voice as a villain in scores of radio dramas before moving to the screen (and the right side of the law) in 1949. His humorless mug and cold, withering stare made him perfect for breaking down suspects and his characters were seldom depicted away from a crime scene or an interrogation room. When he wasn't playing hard-boiled flatfoots he was cast as tough military officers, surly sheriffs, or bellicose proprietors. Lynch made 33 films, including "Anatomy of a Murder" (1959), "North by Northwest" (1959), "Pork Chop Hill" (1959), "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962), and "Walk on the Wild Side" (1962). But the bulk of his work was done for television, where he apparently did time in every crime series ever made from "The Untouchables" to "The Rockford Files". He retired after playing a general in the mini-series "The Winds of War" (1983).
