Sarah was the second child born to Malialda Ann Bookout and Elisha John Brown but due to the unfortunate death of their frist born child, Daniel B. Brown who died before Sarah was born, she was their oldest living child.

She was only ten years old when the Civil War started and learned how hard life could be when you are a refugee of war living without proper shelter and little to eat.

She married George Wesley Hargis on August 15, 1871, to this union six children were born. After she became Mrs. Sarah Hargis she called herself Sarah D. Hargis to distinguish herself from her mother-in-law Sarah Hale Hargis.

After 29 years of a happy life together George would die on December 30, 1900, leaving Sarah alone to finish raising their two youngest children, Rachel age 14 and George age 10.

At the age of 61 Sarah married the Rev. William Franklin Sanders McCarty on July 27, 1912, there were no children born to this union. Upon her death her childen wanted to bury her next to their father as she had planed at the time of his death. W F S McCarty had also planed to be buried next to his second wife at the time of her death so everyone agreed to honor their whishes. But when it came time to put Sarah's name on her headstone none of her children wanted to put her married name at the time of death, Sarah McCarty, on the headstone. So it reads; Sarah D. wife of G W Hargis.
