Joseph H. Wilson was one of the first volunteers to enlist from Connecticut after President Abraham Lincoln's 15 April 1861 proclamation to raise 75,000 troops. He enlisted on 20 April 1861 into Co. A, 1st Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment was mustered in for 90 days service and was at the battle of First Bull Run on 22 July 1861. They fought all day and maintained discipline in the retreat at the end of the day. Joseph H. Wilson next enlisted in Co. I, 22nd CT on 20 September 1862 as a Corporal for nine months service. He was promoted to Sergeant on 24 November 1862 and was the color Sergeant for the regiment. After competing his term of service, he was mustered out with the rest of the regiment at Hartford on 7 July 1863. After the Civil War, he served briefly as a policeman and New York City and the worked as as engineer in the new electrical industry. Joseph H. Wilson died in an industrial accident at the electrical plant in Danbury in September 1887. He married twice, but no children are known. His brother, William Henry Wilson married his widow, Pauline Marie (Batiste) (Johnson) Wilson.
