Inventor, Businessman. An automotive Pioneer, in 1901 he teamed up with engineer John Wilkinson to develop an air-cooled engine. When Wilkinson lost interest in the project, Franklin assumed control of the company, renaming it the Franklin Automobile Company. The first Franklin car was sold in 1902 and produced the first air-cooled automobile engine. Franklin cars were noted for being economical, fuel-efficient and aesthetically-pleasing to consumers, bringing competition to the early years of the automobile industry. In 1928, the Franklin established a new cross-country record of 28.8 miles per gallon. The last Franklin autos were built in 1934, but his air-cooled engine design powered numerous light planes and early American built helicopters. His new company, Air Cooled Motors of Syracuse continued until it was sold to the Polish government in 1975. Many engines based on Franklin's designs are still in production to this date. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1972.
